THE ROLE OF ENERGY IN FIGHTING INFECTION
Dr Arzhan Surazakov and colleagues recently published a journal article1 exploring the bioenergetics of COVID-19 and the potential of biophysical radiances for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19, as well as the symptoms occurring that have been dubbed ‘long COVID’.
Since it has been noted that many people who contract the SARS-CoV-2 virus present only mild symptoms, or are sometimes asymptomatic, while others experience the disease far more severely, the question arose as to what may be contributing to these differences.
Dr Surazakov et al propose that a major factor relates to energy levels in the body.

FUNCTIONAL ENERGY RESERVE
Our bodies need a certain amount of energy to function on a normal, daily level. Before we even open our eyes in the morning, our bodies are using thousands of kilojoules of energy to keep our heart beating, our lungs breathing and every other organ and system working as it should. This is known as our basal metabolic rate. Certain activities and events increase the energy demand, such as exercising, digesting food, or dealing with a stressful situation. These are normal fluctuations in the demand for energy within our bodies.
However, in the case of chronic conditions, pain or even stress, our bodies use up more energy than they would in a healthy or stress-free state. The result of this is that our base energy levels tend to be significantly lower than they should be. We usually experience this as fatigue and often low moods or frequent irritability, apart from actual disease symptoms which may be present.
So, what do these energy levels have to do with viral infections, like COVID-19?
Our immune systems are highly intelligent and adaptive defences which kick into gear any time a foreign invader is detected. Innate immunity is activated within hours of detection of a pathogen and the demand for energy immediately ramps up. This usually translates into a sudden feeling of fatigue or lethargy, sometimes accompanied by early symptoms such as headaches, fever, sore throat, coughing etc. Within a few days of incubation of the invading pathogen, our adaptive immunity is triggered, which then specifically targets the recently detected threat with unique lymphocytes. At this point, there is a huge increase in the demand for energy in order for the immune system to successfully fight off the threat.
If the body cannot produce sufficient energy to meet this increased demand, the immune system is unable to fight of the infection and begins to rapidly fail, resulting in more severe symptoms as well as bodily systems shutting down. However, if it does have enough energy, the immune system is able to successfully carry out its job and bring the body system back to health.
The figure2 below shows the activation of the immune system in response to infection in the case of (A) a mild disease or infection or (B) in the case of infection where the basal metabolic rate is already low due to chronic conditions etc. Disease progression in the latter case is far more severe.
TREATING COVID-19 WITH COMRA THERAPY
coMra therapy combines low-level laser therapy with the healing radiances of colour, magnetism and (in the Delta) ultrasound to treat pain and many other conditions. Read our coMra 101 blog for more on how it works.
Due to the fact that coMra therapy can help provide our bodies with energy at a cellular level, it facilitates the optimum functioning of our immune systems, which demand high amounts of energy. If our basal metabolic rate is low, due to chronic conditions or other factors, coMra therapy can aid in improving this, as well as providing additional energy for the immune system to fight off infection. To understand this process in more detail please refer to our article on How it Works: coMra therapy.
Over the last year, Dr Surazakov and other doctors have been tracking the severity of COVID-19 symptoms, as well as recovery rate, in patients who are using coMra therapy as part of their treatment. The results indicate that overall symptoms tend to be milder with a shorter duration of illness than is typically seen in other patients.
TREATMENT PROTOCOLS FOR COVID-19, FLU AND COLDS
IMMUNE SUPPORT 1
Preventative program for an individual without chronic diseases and below 50 years old.
- Universal 2 (once daily)
- Universal 3 (once daily)
Do this treatment once daily for 12 days. Repeat the programme once every 3 months.
IMMUNE SUPPORT 2
Preventative program for an individual with chronic diseases, over 50 years old, with high risk of infection.
- Universal 2 (twice daily)
- Universal 3 (once daily)
- Universal 4 (as directed in the User Guide)
Do these treatments for 12 days, followed by a 2 week break, then repeat. Continue for 3 months and then break for 3 months.
Note that the immune system’s functional reserves will start increasing after the first 2-3 days of treatments and will peak by the 6th-9th day of the preventative program. The elevated immune status will persist for another 10-14 days and will gradually start to decrease during the next 14-60 days. This means that one preventative program is generally sufficient for about 3 months.
IMMUNE SUPPORT 3
Once you have contracted an infection, this is the treatment program that can be used for common colds, flu, and coronavirus disease.
- Universal 3 (every 4 hours except during sleep time)
- Universal 2 (twice daily)
- In case of headache add Universal 1 (once or twice daily)
- In case of respiratory symptoms add Pulmonology 1 (once or twice daily)
- In case of runny nose add Otorhinolaryngology 1 (once or twice daily)
- In case of sore throat add Otorhinolaryngology 8 (once or twice daily)
Do these treatments until your condition significantly improves. Take a 2 week break and repeat the program. Continue for 3 months followed by a 3 month break.
TREATING LONG COVID WITH COMRA THERAPY
Many people who have contracted and recovered from COVID-19 find themselves with persistent symptoms for several weeks or months afterwards. Shortness of breath, loss of taste or smell, and significant fatigue have been commonly noted.
coMra therapy is an excellent support in these cases as well. At this point it is necessary to provide systemic support, for the whole body, as well as local treatment for problem areas.
The suggested protocol to follow when treating long COVID symptoms is as follows:
- Universal 3 (twice daily)
- Universal 5 (once daily)
- Thyroid gland (2 mins per point @ 50Hz, once daily)
- Local treatment of any areas where symptoms persist (e.g. lungs, sinus etc)
